Here at Hawkes Physiotherapy in Talke, Stoke-on-Trent, we offer different types of massage:
‘Sports Massage (also referred to as soft tissue massage) is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, ligaments and tendons.’ (Sports Massage Association)
Sports massage is really just massage techniques that are applied to a sport setting or for a sporting reason.
Massage & therefore Sports massage can be divided into 4 categories relating to the reason for its application.
Remedial massage – Massage to aid the recovery of particular injuries or specific problem areas. (Most commonly used in our Stoke-on-Trent Physiotherapy practice)
General preventative massage – A deep massage to give relaxation to any muscles that are found to be holding excessive tension, this is preventative as tense muscles are more liable to become injured & will hold joints stiff leading to pain.
Pre-event warm up massage – short, shallow & vigorous massage to get the blood flowing within the muscles. This is used before the event starts to prepare the body for sport and activity.
Recuperative massage – to soothe tired & aching muscles after work, sports events or hard training and aid the recovery process.
The benefits of massage include:
Pain relief Relaxation of soft tissues Stress relief Improved circulation and lymphatic flow Assists in the removal of metabolic waste Sedates or stimulate nerve endings Increase or decrease muscle length Increase or decrease muscle tone Assists scar tissue healing Assists in the mental preparation for sport
Remember massage is not just for sports people. The benefits above can also help relieve many day to day problems that everyone experiences.
